Possible signals for Vietnam’s shipbuilding industry
05/02/2023The shipbuilding scene is still facing a lot of problems in terms of access to capital, lack of human resources, especially passive sources of materials, equipment, and machinery… However, with the work, there are contracts. Shipbuilding as large as time has helped Vietnam’s shipbuilding enterprises have more hope to thrive again…
The signing ceremony of a new large-tonnage ship contract by the General Director of Pha Rung Shipbuilding Company with Yentec Company
Pha Rung Shipbuilding Company under the Shipbuilding Industry Corporation (SBIC) and Yentec Company (Korea) have just signed a contract to construct and build new ships of large tonnage. According to the contract, Pha Rung Shipbuilding Company will build a new series of 5 specialized oil and chemical tankers with a tonnage of 13,000 tons each for Yentec Company to export to Korea.
This series of ships is designed according to the standards of the Korean side, the classification of KR registration. The ship has the hull designation according to the design YN-01/02/03/04/05 with the overall length of 128.6, width 20.4 m, side height 11.5 m and draft] is 8.7 m. The time to complete this contract is in 3 years, of which 3 ships will be built in 2023, the remaining 2 ships will be completed and handed over to Yentec in 2025.
Sharing with VnEconomy, Mr. Vu Huu Chien – General Director of Pha Rung Shipbuilding Company, said that this contract has an important meaning in maintaining the stability of the business, besides ensuring revenue and generating jobs for hundreds of workers, while avoiding the waste of previously invested and purchased equipment, especially maintaining the capacity and brand of Vietnam’s shipbuilding industry in general and Shipbuilding Industry Corporation in particular.
Before this event, many experts said that this is a positive signal, signaling a new development cycle of the world shipbuilding market.
According to Associate Professor – Dr. Pham Xuan Duong – Rector of Vietnam Maritime University, due to a rather long period of “stagnation” in the shipbuilding industry, the fleet of ships is quite old. Therefore, the need for a new generation of ships is imperative for the safety of the shipping industry and must comply with the strict regulations of the International Maritime Organization (IMO).
Besides, sea transport is always an effective mode of freight transport because it can transport large quantities and tonnages of goods, including super-long and super-weight goods, saving costs for shippers, at the same time ensure the necessary “distancing” if there is an epidemic similar to the recent Covid-19.
Currently, the world’s shipping fleets have been operating on global cargo routes with many ships originating in Vietnam, thereby clearly demonstrating the capacity of the domestic shipbuilding industry. As for Pha Rung Shipbuilding Company, this is a very strong unit in building new Handysize oil/chemical tankers.
According to statistics, from 2007 up to now, Pha Rung has built nearly 10 oil/chemical tankers of 6,500DWT and 13,000DWT for export to Korea and other countries.
In addition, Pha Rung also builds new series of cargo ships from 6,500 tons to 34,000 tons for domestic and international customers as well as new special ships such as fishing surveillance ships for the Navy Command. Roro ship for the Dutch Daimen corporation…
At the ceremony, Mr. Park Zangaha – Chairman of Yentec Company said, this is the third signing after nearly 20 years of our cooperation with Pha Rung Shipbuilding Company. The stability of product quality, the assurance of progress and the highly competitive price bracket of Pha Rung were the decisive factors in convincing strength. We identify Pha Rung Shipbuilding Company as a strategic and reliable partner in Yentec’s development roadmap.”
Obviously, while the domestic heavy industry is still slow to develop, and the shipbuilding industry is still suffering from significant consequences after major events, the cooperation of Pha Rung with Yentec is a positive signal for the whole branch.
According to Mr. Nguyen Tien Dat – Deputy General Director of Shipbuilding Industry Corporation (SBIC), this is an event marking the efforts of Pha Rung to overcome difficulties. However, the entire shipbuilding industry is still facing a lot of challenges, challenges in accessing capital, challenges in human resources, especially in materials, equipment, machinery… Due to the fact that they are completely imported, domestic shipbuilders are passive in terms of prices in negotiations, most of them only do the processing, so the economic efficiency is not high.
It is known that the marine economy has been identified by the Central Government as one of the strategies to bring the country to sustainable development, one of the fields of the marine economy is the seaport system, the diverse fleets of ships serving for many fields from economy to defense and security.
