The event of receiving OOCL Spain ships docked at Gemalink port is considered to open a new phase of development for Cai Mep port cluster and Vietnam’s maritime industry in general.
On February 18, the Ministry of Transport kicked off the construction investment project of upgrading Cai Mep – Thi Vai channel from buoy “0” to Cai Mep container port.
In which, renovating and expanding the channel from buoy number “0” to CMIT port, upgraded length of 30.5 km with a width of the bottom of the channel 350 m and a depth of -15.5 m. At the same time, setting up a turning basin at the river confluence of the River (downstream of SSIT port) with a diameter of 700 m and at the confluence of the Go Gia river with a diameter of 600 m and a depth of -15.5 m.
The project is expected to complete construction in 2024, to accommodate ships with a tonnage of up to 200,000 DWT/18,000 Teu offloaded or larger (meeting maritime safety conditions) for one-way operation.
With a water depth of -16.5 m in front of the wharf, Gemalink Deep Water Port is one of the seaports with the deepest draft in Vietnam today.
With this specification, the port is one of the few seaports in the world to receive parent shipping lines with a tonnage of up to 250,000 DWT – the world’s largest container ship size today to optimize operational efficiency.

According to Decision No. 804/QD-TTg, dated July 8, 2022 of the Prime Minister announcing the list of 34 seaports, Vietnam has 2 seaports of special type, Hai Phong seaport and Ba Ria – Vung Tau seaport. Ship.

Seaport classification criteria
Previously, the Government issued Decree No. 76/2021/ND-CP dated July 28, 2021 providing criteria for classification of seaports. According to this Decree, criteria for assessing and classifying seaports in Vietnam include criteria on the scope of influence of seaports and criteria on the size of seaports.
The Decree stipulates the assessment and classification of seaports according to the scoring method. The rating scale is 100 points. The rating scale is determined specifically for each criterion.
Based on the score, seaports are evaluated and classified into 4 categories, which are special seaports: Having a total score of over 90 points; Class I seaports: Having a total score of over 70 points to 90 points; Class II seaports: Having a total score of 50 to 70 points; Class III seaports: Having a total score of less than 50 points.
