Vietnam’s major seaport welcomes the world’s largest super container ship

On March 30, the container ship OOCL Spain safely docked at Gemalink port in Cai Mep – Thi Vai, Ba Ria – Vung Tau province. This is one of the largest ships in the world today with a length of nearly 400m, a width of 61.3m, just released in February 2023. This is also the largest container ship ever to dock at Cai Mep-Thi Vai port, Ba Ria-Vung Tau province.

Super ship OOCL Spain can carry 146 km of containers

Accordingly, the container ship OOCL Spain has a tonnage of up to 225,000 tons and can carry 24,188 TEUs. To make it easier to imagine the number of containers that this ship can carry, Gemalink port said that if the containers are stacked one after another, it will be more than 146 km long.

This is the first voyage of the OOCL Spain ship on the Asia – Europe LL3 route passing through Chinese ports, calling at Cai Mep and then following the routes Singapore – Piraeus – Hamburg – Rotterdam – Zeebrugge – Valencia – Piraeus – Abu Dhabi – Singapore – Shanghai. The journey lasted 84 days.

With a carrying capacity of up to 24,188 Teu, a total length of 399.99 m and a width of 61.3 m, with a draft of -15 m and a draft of -15.5 m, OOCL Spain is ranked as one of the best The world’s largest super container ship.

Opening a new stage of development for Vietnam’s maritime industry

Previously, the Ministry of Transport had issued a document supporting the policy of adjusting the planning of Cai Mep Gemadept Port – Terminal Link to receive ships with a tonnage of up to 250,000 DWT, as well as agreeing on the policy of allowing OOCL Spain ships of large capacity. loading up to 232,495 DWT in and out of the harbor.

The event of receiving OOCL Spain ships docked at Gemalink port is considered to open a new phase of development for Cai Mep port cluster and Vietnam’s maritime industry in general.

On February 18, the Ministry of Transport kicked off the construction investment project of upgrading Cai Mep – Thi Vai channel from buoy “0” to Cai Mep container port.

In which, renovating and expanding the channel from buoy number “0” to CMIT port, upgraded length of 30.5 km with a width of the bottom of the channel 350 m and a depth of -15.5 m. At the same time, setting up a turning basin at the river confluence of the River (downstream of SSIT port) with a diameter of 700 m and at the confluence of the Go Gia river with a diameter of 600 m and a depth of -15.5 m.

The project is expected to complete construction in 2024, to accommodate ships with a tonnage of up to 200,000 DWT/18,000 Teu offloaded or larger (meeting maritime safety conditions) for one-way operation.

With a water depth of -16.5 m in front of the wharf, Gemalink Deep Water Port is one of the seaports with the deepest draft in Vietnam today.

With this specification, the port is one of the few seaports in the world to receive parent shipping lines with a tonnage of up to 250,000 DWT – the world’s largest container ship size today to optimize operational efficiency.

Vietnam has 2 special seaports; 11 seaports of class I

According to Decision No. 804/QD-TTg, dated July 8, 2022 of the Prime Minister announcing the list of 34 seaports, Vietnam has 2 seaports of special type, Hai Phong seaport and Ba Ria – Vung Tau seaport. Ship.

11 ports of grade I include: Quang Ninh seaport, Thanh Hoa seaport, Nghe An seaport, Ha Tinh seaport, Da Nang seaport, Quang Ngai seaport, Binh Dinh seaport, Khanh Hoa seaport, and HCMC seaport. Ho Chi Minh City, Dong Nai Seaport, Can Tho Seaport.

7 ports of class II include: Quang Binh seaport, Quang Tri seaport, Thua Thien Hue seaport, Binh Thuan seaport, Dong Thap seaport, Hau Giang seaport and Tra Vinh seaport.

List of 14 seaports: Nam Dinh, Thai Binh, Quang Nam, Phu Yen, Ninh Thuan, Binh Duong, Long An, Tien Giang, Ben Tre, Soc Trang, An Giang, Vinh Long, Ca Mau, Kien Giang are ports type III.

Seaport classification criteria

Previously, the Government issued Decree No. 76/2021/ND-CP dated July 28, 2021 providing criteria for classification of seaports. According to this Decree, criteria for assessing and classifying seaports in Vietnam include criteria on the scope of influence of seaports and criteria on the size of seaports.

The Decree stipulates the assessment and classification of seaports according to the scoring method. The rating scale is 100 points. The rating scale is determined specifically for each criterion.

Based on the score, seaports are evaluated and classified into 4 categories, which are special seaports: Having a total score of over 90 points; Class I seaports: Having a total score of over 70 points to 90 points; Class II seaports: Having a total score of 50 to 70 points; Class III seaports: Having a total score of less than 50 points.
