Vietnam to host the 44th ASEAN Maritime Transport Working Group Meeting

From May 9-11, the Vietnam Maritime Administration (MOT) coordinated with the ASEAN Secretariat to organize the Transport Working Group Meeting. The 44th ASEAN Maritime Administration (MTWG 44) in Da Nang.

As the Chairman of the Conference under the rotating mechanism of ASEAN, the Conference will be chaired by the Deputy Director of the Vietnam Maritime Administration Hoang Hong Giang. 

The participants included 10 ASEAN member countries, the ASEAN Secretariat, the International Maritime Organization (IMO), dialogue partners: the United States, Japan, South Korea, China, India, and the ASEAN Regional Association.

The Vietnam Maritime Administration was assigned by the Minister of Transport to be the Head of the Vietnam MTWG, according to the rotating mechanism, Vietnam will host the ASEAN MTWG Conference, for the 2022-2023 term, while fulfilling the obligations of the country. It is also an opportunity for the host country Vietnam to affirm and enhance its role and position in transport and transport cooperation with international friends.

The 44th MTWG meeting will continue to focus on some important projects, such as implementing measures related to maritime transportation in accordance with the Kuala Lumpur 2021-2026 strategic plan; By implementing the agreed strategies and measures (MT-1), achieve the ASEAN Unified Maritime Market (ASSM); Implement the operation of the Anti Osmosis Transport Network (MT-2) in ASEAN; Develop an efficient and integrated inland water transport network (IWWT) (MT-3); Strengthen positioning systems and security measures in accordance with international standards (MT-4); Develop initiatives and policy recommendations for the development of strategic maritime logistics between ASEAN and its dialogue partners; Strengthen regional cooperation and improve traffic safety; Strengthen regional cooperation and develop policies and strategies related to sustainable transportation (ST-1).

Identify and implement key measures for sustainable transport (ST-2); strengthening regional cooperation in the application of smart technology in the field of transportation (ST-4); maritime traffic initiatives to respond to the pandemic, the COVID-19 crisis; ASEAN regional cooperation on ship waste management; progress of the work of the Working Group in the period of 2022-2023; ASEAN cooperation with private sector partners (Seaport Associations, Ship Owners) and regional dialogue partners; New maritime transport and urgent matters…

As the Chairman of the conference, Mr. Hoang Hong Giang, Deputy Director of the Vietnam Maritime Administration believes that the Conference will achieve breakthroughs in solving the issues discussed at the Conference of the Ministry of Maritime Affairs. The 28th ASEAN Transport Minister and the 44th ASEAN Senior Transport Officials Meeting as well as issues were put on the agenda. 

Previously, in 2022, the Vietnam Maritime Administration hosted and completed 2 sessions of the Conference (MTWG 42 was held online from March 9 to 10, 2022, in Hanoi; MTWG 43 was held directly from September 20 to 22, 2022, in Nha Trang) and received high appreciation from international colleagues for the organization, content preparation, and conference management skills.
